Growing on paper. Stretched everywhere else.

Sales are up. The days are longer. You’re busier than you’ve ever been — and somehow the bank balance doesn’t reflect any of it.

If that sounds familiar, you haven’t done anything wrong. You’re just too close to your own business to see clearly what’s actually happening inside it.

Sometimes what’s needed isn’t a harder look through the same window. It’s stepping back far enough to see a different one.

A calm, free conversation — no pitch, no prep, no obligation.

Does any of this sound familiar?

  • Profitable on paper. Empty in the bank.
Customers pay slowly. Bills don’t wait. You’re doing the work, the sales are real — but the cash never quite lands when you need it to.

  • Business growing but profits are not.
Revenue keeps climbing and somehow you’re no better off — busier, more stretched, and no closer to actually keeping more of what you make.

  • Cash sitting on a shelf instead of in the bank.
Inventory that isn’t moving. Money you can see, but can’t spend — because it’s tied up in stock, not sitting in the account.

  • Growth that’s outrunning the cash to support it.
More hiring, more space, more stock — because the business is growing and it felt like the right call. Now cash is tighter than it’s ever been.

  • Not sure if now’s the right time to bring in funding.
Growth or a new project might need capital. You don’t know if it’s the right call, or who you’d even trust to help arrange it.

  • Not sure what the business is actually worth.
You’ve built something real, but you couldn’t say with confidence what it would be worth to a buyer, a lender, or your own retirement — or what would actually move that number.

None of this means something is broken, and it doesn’t mean you’ve missed something you should have caught. It usually means one thing: you’re too close to see it clearly.

You’re not imagining it, and you’re not alone in it either — this is one of the most common patterns I see in businesses that are otherwise doing everything right.

Sometimes it shows up as cash, margin or funding uncertainty. Just as often, it shows up as decision fatigue, a strategy that’s quietly drifted, or decisions that never seem to leave your desk.

What’s actually going on

In 35+ years of commercial and financial leadership — including through a number of acquired business integrations, all packaging businesses — I kept seeing the same pattern. Every business owner I’ve sat down with was already smart, already working hard, and already deeply invested in getting this right. What they’d lost — without realising it — was the outside vantage point that makes patterns like these visible.

I call this Business Blindness: the way familiarity, over time, makes it harder to see clearly what’s happening inside your own business. It’s not a lack of effort or intelligence. It’s proximity. And it’s far more common than most owners realise.

My primary focus is manufacturers and traders/distributors in packaging — converters, corrugated, folding carton, bags and consumable packaging businesses — though the same approach applies to any established SME.

Business owner gaining clarity and perspective on business performance and decision-making

Where I help most

  • Profitable Sales Growth
Revenue can grow while profit quietly doesn’t — new accounts landing while resin, board and freight costs creep in faster than pricing keeps pace. I help you see which sales, customers and products are actually making you money — and build growth that adds to the bottom line, not just the top line.

  • Cash Flow Improvement
Slow-paying customers, tight payables timing, stock that’s tying up money instead of making it — often without a clear view of true cost-to-serve once every short-run request and SKU change is accounted for. I help you see the real cash position and free up what’s trapped in the business.

  • Business Value Improvement
A business that depends entirely on you — common in family-run converters where every material substitution or customer exception still runs through one person — is worth less than it should be. I help you understand what the business is actually worth, what’s holding that back, and what to do about it — including connecting you with a trusted partner when funding is part of the answer.

How these connect

This is an illustrative example built to show how these patterns typically connect — it is not based on a specific client, and no identifying details are real.

A distributor chasing every spot-buy request looks like growth — until the sales mix has quietly drifted, cash is tied up in stock held “just in case,” and the owner realises he’s the only one who can make the calls that keep it all running. Three problems that are usually one.

How I work

Every engagement follows the same shape: step back and take a fresh look, get clear on what’s actually happening, turn that clarity into a plan, and keep it in place as the business changes.

Most owners start with a single, free conversation — and go only as far from there as it’s actually useful.

You built this business. You don’t have to see it alone.

An outside perspective doesn’t take anything away from what you’ve built — if anything, it’s a relief. One honest conversation is often enough to turn a problem that’s been sitting heavy into something you can actually see a way through.

Start with clarity

Most business owners wait longer than they need to before asking someone outside the business to take a look.
